A flash flood warning has been issued by the US National Weather Service (NWS) for south-central Texas through at least 5:00 PM on January 22.
This includes San Antonio and portions of northwest Atascosa, western Bexar, Comal, and southeastern Medina counties. On short notice, officials could broaden or change the warning to include the surrounding areas.
Long-term, intense rains have the potential to cause flooding in low-lying areas close to rivers, streams, and creeks. In developed locations where stormwater drainage systems are readily overloaded, urban flooding can also occur.
After comparatively brief periods of strong rainfall, sites downstream from big reservoirs or rivers may experience flash flooding. In steep or mountainous terrain, landslides can occur, particularly when there has been a lot of rain.
Low-lying locations may have localized business disruptions; certain businesses may not be able to operate at full capacity due to facility damage from flooding, potential evacuations, and staff inaccessibility.
Disruptions to telecommunications, energy, and transportation are also conceivable in areas affected by flooding.
