Greta Gerwig, the filmmaker of Barbie, was noticeably left out of the best director category when the Oscar nominations were announced on Tuesday.
However, after no female filmmaker was nominated in the category the previous year, Justine Triet of Anatomy of a Fall was.
On Tuesday morning, the following people received nominations for the coveted category: Triet, Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest), and Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon).
Gerwig is a noteworthy omission, as the Barbie filmmaker won the Palm Springs International Film Fest and was nominated for multiple best director honors throughout the awards season, including the Directors Guild of America, the Golden Globes, and Critics Choice.
She was also included in a number of critics’ predictions for the best director, including The Hollywood Reporter.The Holdovers’ Alexander Payne, the front-runner, was also left off.
