Is Renting a Car Worth It in Los Angeles in 2024?
On the Los Angeles board, this is one of the most often asked issues and subjects of discussion. You could check out some older discussions and the Los Angeles FAQs. If you stay at the Roosevelt, you may take public transportation to tour Los Angeles, including the Getty Center and Venice Beach.
There is a bus that goes directly to the LA County Museum of Art, which is a more interesting museum than the Getty, albeit with less striking architecture, and a metro line that goes to Downtown LA that is close by. The Hollywood transit system is extensive. The fundamental trade-off is that, on average, an automobile is faster than public transportation.
The Roosevelt doesn’t mention it, but I think parking there costs roughly $50 per night (you could find a surface lot somewhere else for $20). That’s in addition to the cost of the rental car, gas, and any additional parking.
For instance, there is no admission fee to the Getty, therefore taking the bus there is free. However, parking costs $25. The daily cost of a transportation pass is $6, or $40 for a week. I would also place the environmental benefit on the transit side.
In any event, because Los Angeles is excessively dispersed, cabs won’t be of much assistance unless money is no object. For example, a taxi ride to Venice Beach would cost between $60 and $70. If you had gone to a club in the Hollywood/West Hollywood neighborhood, you could have taken a taxi.
